Composer Time Machine Project

Imagine for a minute actually getting to meet great composers from the past. Imagine no more! We have created a “time machine” that transports composers from history to the present day. Once they are here, we let them explore the city of Long Beach, and we ask them to explain their lives. We provide them with their own Instagram account so they can document their experiences while they are here. Their visit culminates in a live event for the wider public to experience performances of music written by the composer, and ask the composer some of their burning questions. After this live event, the composer (played by an actor), is transported back home. Each composer will come back and visit occasionally, and interact with other composers that we have transported through time as well. This project is designed to be a great educational tool for youth and adults alike.

Pieces for Protest

Pieces for Protest is a youth project that was developed and produced over the summer of 2020. Three youth currently attending schools in the Long Beach Unified School District were given the tools and resources they needed in order to compose their own works that expressed their feelings about racial injustice in America. The group met with our director, Daniel Smith, on a weekly basis to provide initial guidance and suggestions as the students began their compositions. The group also met every other week to discuss racial and social injustices they observed and personally experienced; and also check in about the progress of their compositions. Each student performed and recorded their works at the end of the summer. They were uploaded to Instagram under the account: @Pieces4Protest.

Classical Car Rides

Southern California is famous for many things, including the amount of time we spend in our cars. Surprisingly, cars are also a great venue for experiencing classical music. In this show, a host drives around Long Beach with a special guest who does not normally listen to classical music. The host plays them pieces of classical music they think the guest will enjoy, and then they discuss the music and their personal reactions to each piece. They also stop at local restaurants and pick up some tasty treats to enjoy in the car!

Concert for One

Concerts can be fun, but also a bit overwhelming. If you’ve never been to a classical music concert, the experience can be downright intimidating and impersonal. “Concert for One” is a concert designed for a person who has never been to a classical concert before. It is a concert performed by one musician, for…you guessed it! An audience of one. This type of setting allows each of the participants to really talk and connect. Our goal with this type of concert experience is to invite new folks into the wonderfully emotionally powerful world of classical music.
